when can I add a betta to my tank? Thank you. (10 points)?
I have a 10 gallon tank with a gentle filter. and a heater. temp is 78. and a few Fake "Silk plants" so it wont rip the bettas fins like plastic ones will. gravel substrate. With the filtera nd heater its been running 5-6 days. But yesterday i Put some flakes in a nylon sock and hung it in the tank. and added some more food today. When can I add just the betta to the tank? im getting a male one. Thanks! also any tankmates once the tank is done are appreciated as well. could I add a betta this weekend once Some more bacteria has formed as betta fish do not have alot of waste? should I add even more food? should I add api stress zyme? Any aquarium salt to prevent illness? What else do I need to do before adding him. thanks
You can add the betta to the tank when you test your parameters and get 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 5+ppm nitrate. when you get that reading change 50% of your water and add fish immediately. a group of either 5 cory cats or 6 small tetras would make a nice 10 gallon aquarium. You will wanna keep feeding your tank until it is fully cycled. The only chemical I would use is one to dechlorinate the water. I could be wrong but I don't think Betta's do well with salt, don't take my word for that one though. snails and shrimp would also make nice tank mates for a betta. the cycle usually takes 3-8 weeks. if your heater is adjustable and there is no fish in the tank the take the temp up to 86, that will cycle the tank faster. If you do that when the cycle is done only drop the temp 2 degrees every 8 hours. a sudden temp change could kill some of the beneficial bacteria.
